Egg Donation Process

Egg donation is an advanced fertility treatment where a healthy woman donates her eggs to help another woman achieve pregnancy. This method is most commonly used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and can involve either fresh or frozen donor eggs, depending on the treatment plan.

Who Needs Donor Eggs?

Egg donation is often recommended for women facing challenges with their own fertility due to:

  • Premature menopause or ovarian failure

  • Low ovarian reserve

  • Surgical removal or damage to the ovaries

  • Genetic or chromosomal conditions

  • Previous IVF cycles with no or poor ovarian response

The 5 Key Stages of the Egg Donation Process

Donor Matching

Donor Matching

The first step begins with choosing the right donor. You can register on the Ovoria Egg Bank website to gain full access to available donor profiles. After selecting a suitable match, our coordinator will confirm donor availability. Once matched, we will provide a list of necessary medical exams for the intended mother to begin preparation.

Screening and Hormonal Preparation

Screening and Hormonal Preparation

While the egg donor begins ovarian stimulation under medical supervision, the recipient also begins uterine lining preparation using estradiol valerate. This hormone therapy ensures the uterus is ready for embryo implantation. Our doctors monitor the recipient’s progress remotely and will require ultrasound scans to assess readiness.

Egg Retrieval and Fertilization

Egg Retrieval and Fertilization

Once the donor’s follicles are ready, eggs are retrieved in a short, minimally invasive procedure. These eggs are then fertilized with either the partner’s or donor sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are cultured for up to five days to reach the blastocyst stage.

Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer

After embryo development, one or more high-quality embryos are selected for transfer into the recipient’s uterus. This can be done using fresh sperm (if the partner visits the clinic) or frozen sperm samples sent in advance. The embryo transfer procedure is quick, painless, and doesn’t require anesthesia.

Pregnancy Confirmation

Pregnancy Confirmation

Two weeks after embryo transfer, the recipient takes a blood test for beta-HCG to determine if implantation was successful. If the result is positive, the doctor will prescribe medications to support early pregnancy until the first ultrasound scan confirms the presence of a gestational sac and heartbeat.
